Combine your conference visit with an inspiring IDC_Masterclass

Especially for visitors of the Information Design Conference, journalistic illustrator Kwennie Cheng and Basel-based design agency Superdot will each give a 3-hour masterclass on Thursday 12 Oct. You can choose one or both masterclasses, but please note that the masterclass by Kwennie Cheng will be in Dutch only. When you choose both masterclasses, lunch is included. Both IDC_Masterclasses will be held at the offices of the Dutch newspaper NRC Handelsblad, in the center of Amsterdam.

Hoe communiceer je jouw boodschap in één data-beeld?
Het werk van Kwennie Cheng bevindt zich op het snijvlak van opinie, illustratie en data. In deze masterclass neemt Kwennie je mee in het maakproces. We gaan aan de slag met het bepalen welke onderwerpen en vooral datasets wel en niet geschikt zijn. We onderzoeken de raakvlakken maar vooral ook verschillen tussen data-illustraties en datavisualisaties en de invloed van opinie op de data. We kijken ook naar de rol van tekst en hoe jij je datavisualisaties nog beter kunt aanschrijven. Je gaat zelf aan de slag met een (eigen) onderwerp en zet de eerste stappen voor het maken van jouw data-illustratie.

How to design innovative, multi-dimensional diagrams?
Superdot Studio developed a new step-by-step method called “Modular Information Design System” (MID) to design innovative, multi-dimensional diagrams. MID was first published in their book “Visualizing Complexity” in 2022. During this masterclass, you'll explore new approaches to presenting data through sketching. The approach is suitable for beginners but it also provides a new perspective for advanced practitioners. You'll experiment with design variations using pen and paper. (Bring color fineliners and ideally pastel markers)
